Handcrafted Tansu Handles: Maruza & Nagaza

Handcrafted Tansu Handles: Maruza & Nagaza

Josh Miyakawa |

A handle may be a small part of a piece of furniture, but it can shape the impression of the whole. Its proportions, texture, and finish bring another layer of detail to the wood around it.

MORIKUNI’s handcrafted tansu handles combine traditional Japanese forms with the individual character of hand-forged steel. Available in Maruza and Nagaza styles, they offer a distinctive finishing touch for a tansu-inspired chest, a custom sideboard, or a contemporary cabinet.

The Character of Hand-Forged Steel

Made in Japan by Hiroshi Oikawa of Kikuhiro, each handle is forged and finished by hand. Traditional hammering techniques leave subtle variations in the surface, giving each piece its own texture.

The black finish brings out that texture and provides a rich contrast against wood. On lighter timber, the handle becomes a prominent detail; against darker wood, it creates a quieter, more understated effect. The curved pull and textured surface make these handles especially appealing for furniture with a rustic or organic feel.

Two Classic Designs

Maruza: Round Bases

The Maruza style pairs a curved pull with two separate round bases. Its compact mounting details leave more of the drawer front visible, allowing the wood grain and the handle’s shape to share attention.

Nagaza: Long Backplate

The Nagaza style combines the curved pull with an elongated backplate. The plate adds a stronger horizontal line and gives the hardware a more substantial visual presence.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Project

Both styles are available in three center-to-center sizes: 56 mm, 70 mm, and 77 mm. This measurement describes the distance between the two mounting points.

When choosing a size, consider the proportions of the drawer as well as the mounting spacing. A smaller handle can suit a compact drawer, while a larger handle can give a wider drawer a more balanced appearance. The backplate also affects the overall look, so compare the full dimensions of each style on its product page.

For replacement projects, check your existing mounting holes and the fastener requirements before ordering. These handcrafted handles use split fasteners. If your project requires custom dimensions, please contact us to discuss the possibilities.

A Finishing Touch for Furniture Made with Care

Whether you are building a traditional tansu-inspired piece or introducing Japanese details into a modern design, handcrafted hardware offers another way to express your choices as a maker.

The simple forms of Maruza and Nagaza let the texture of the metal and the grain of the wood speak together—details to appreciate each time a drawer is opened.
